ABOUT DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASTOLOGY

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology was established in 1986/87 academic session following the establishment of Faculty of Medicine in 1984/85 academic year. It commenced academic activities in 1987/88 academic session. At its inception, the Department (though a clinical department) was involved in the training of medical students at the pre-clinical level (i.e levels 200 and 300) under the Community Based Medical Education and Services Programme (CBME & SP). However, following the establishment of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in the mid 1990s for the medical school, the Department began and has been actively engaged in the clinical training of undergraduate MBBS students under Laboratory Medicine or Pathology. The Faculty as a whole has succeeded in achieving full accreditation by the National University commissions (NUC) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) in 2001 and this allowed medical students to be graduating with the M.B.B.S. degree of the University.
