ABOUT DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY

  The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is one of the departments that were initially established to commence the teaching of Medical students following the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine , now Faculty of Clinical Sciences.  Since its inception, it has been involved in teaching, research and clinical services. The Faculty received full accreditation by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) in 2001 and has graduated medical doctors with the M.B., B.S. degree of the University. In addition, the Department has been granted full accreditation by both the National and West African College of Surgeons for the training of resident doctors in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The Department is staffed with 20 lecturers, which include 6 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 8 Senior Lecturers and 1 Lecturer 1. The Department has established MSc Human Reproduction and a Professional Master’s degree in Reproductive Health. In addition, and in collaboration with ACEPHAP, the department hosts MSc Maternal, Child and Health Policy.The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology provides tertiary level Obstetric and Gynaecologic services in the following areas:-

1. Training medical students, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Physiotherapy students as well as Resident doctors in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
2. Obstetrics and Gynecological care services
3. Conduct of research
4. Community outreach services

The department has the following units:-

1. Maternal and fetal medicine
2. Infertility and Reproductive Medicine
3. Reproductive Health and Family Planning
4. Gynecological Oncology
5. Urogynecology

The departmental objectives are:
• Providing an outstanding program of research, teaching and service;
• Translating research findings into effective practices and sound policies.
• Provision of Community services in the form of community awareness and provision of in service training to health workers especially those working in the catchment area of the university
